PAMF MUSEUM DONATION PROCEDURES THE PAN AM MUSEUM FOUNDATION
The support of those who donate historic items is greatly appreciated.
If you're considering donating Pan Am heirlooms and memorabilia, the first thing you need to do is figure out exactly what you've got. Whose was it? When was it used? What was its purpose? The more you know about your items, the easier it will be for the museum staff to evaluate them.
Please review our guidelines for donated artifacts and memorabilia below. You may be asked to sign a receipt form for your items indicating that you understand these guidelines.
Items considered for donations will ultimately require you to submit photographs and a detailed description before final acceptance. Donor assumes all shipping costs.
Due to the large number of offers we receive and to insure the safety of your items, we are unable to accept unsolicited material through the mail or in person without prior communication.
If you have uniforms, artifacts, video footage, photographs, documents, archival material, etc. that you believe would benefit the Museum’s Mission, please contact the following individual(s) to discuss your potential donation: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Museum personnel cannot appraise donations for tax purposes, nor may Museum personnel appraise items as a service for the donor.
Items must have clear title and be free of copyright restrictions.
Items received for evaluation must be properly documented with the item’s ownership history and donor’s contact information, a copy of which will be given to the donor.
Items being donated must be accompanied by any biographical and/or background information available that establishes the item’s historical significance. Particularly in the case of photographs, information on the date, location, subject(s), and so forth is necessary to put the image in historical perspective.
Prepare a list of all items to be donated and provide the description, as detailed as possible, for each item. Include the year, where the item is from, the type of aircraft the item was used on, any special or commemorative event the item was used for, and any other details to identify all the items as historically and accurately as possible. For uniforms state the year, the designer, and a brief description of it (blouse, skirt, etc).
All donated items are accepted on a conditional basis, with a final decision subject to an evaluation by Museum staff.
Items accepted as donations are documented with a written “Deed of Gift” from the Museum to the donor once the items are added to the Museum’s inventory.
Donation of items is not a guarantee of their use in exhibitions. Items may be stored in Museum warehouses until suitable use is determined.
Can I Take A Tax Deduction For My Donation?
PAMF is recognized as a qualified not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, thus the fair market value of your donated materials is generally tax deductible. To take advantage of your deduction, you must file IRS Form 1040 and, depending on the value of your donation, IRS form 8283.
To ensure that you receive the maximum tax benefit, it is recommended that you consult with your own accountant, attorney, and/or the Internal Revenue Service. You may also consult Internal Revenue Service Publications No 526 and No 561.
Can PAMF Appraise My Donation For Its Monetary Value?
No. We cannot provide appraisals of the monetary value of materials proposed for donation or for any other reason, because the Internal Revenue Service regards museums as interested parties. Monetary appraisals prepared by such institutions for its donors are subject to question or disqualification.
However, professional appraisers do perform this service for a fee. To find a licensed appraiser in your area, contact the American Society of Appraisers (www.appraisers.org), the International Society of Appraisers (www.isa-appraisers.org), or the Appraisers Association of America (www.appraisersassoc.org) for a referral.
